Professor Conrad

Tutoring, teaching, mentoring, coaching

Studio B Learning Center is about helping you survive the standard classroom and the standard teaching model. Professor Conrad concentrates on discovery learning for individuals and small groups of no more than 4 students.

I help students who are:

  • public schooled
  • private schooled
  • home schooled
  • ADD or ADHD
  • mildly autistic or Asperger’s Syndrome
  • college-bound or college-hopeful students
  • returning after an absence
  • falling behind
  • bullied in school
  • not performing or challenged
  • in need of enrichment experiences
  • focused on studies not offered in traditional schools
  • hands-on, project-based learners

I take a gentle, creative, and systematic approach with individualized interaction.

When thinking of the word teacher, most people conjure up an image of a person whose major role is maintaining discipline in the classroom, and whose minor role is providing some form of organized learning while keeping everyone on the same page. This is the person who keeps you in line and who notes your progress by ticking off everything you do wrong on an assignment or test.

This is the opposite of discovery and enrichment learning.

If you are just learning to play a guitar, at first you get it completely wrong. Slowly you add a little competence as you progress. Once you get to the point where you can play a simple song, your performance is still full of errors: the timing is off beat, you hit the wrong notes for the wrong duration, you scratch the pick off the strings instead of strumming them, you bend the strings a little bit off key, and you might not even have the guitar in tune.

All of these add up to a poor grade when looked at from the standard teaching model, but when we look at this from a point of view of progress, we see a student who is making incremental gains. Encouragement is what is needed, not a discouraging grade. Feedback should focus on what is working and include a little coaching on the next step for improvement. Anything else demotivates the student and slows or even stops the learning process. Frankly, the standard classroom can’t provide the one-on-one guidance a student needs to turn individual performance into coaching for success.

At Studio B Learning Center I give students a chance to shine in a non-threatening environment by nurturing personal growth through expert instruction. I specialize in tutoring students to achieve their highest potential by changing their habits and beliefs.
